What are the common combustion testers for textile combustion performance testing?
For most textiles, combustion performance is one of the main indicators, so it is very necessary to carry out relevant tests. So, what are the common combustion testers for textile combustion performance testing?
Vertical Burning Test:
The sample is ignited directly from the vertically suspended sample strip, and the sample is tested for burn-in time, smoldering time, and length or area of damage to evaluate the flame retardant properties of the textile. The method is suitable for detecting the burning characteristics of children’s clothing, decorative fabrics, laminated fabrics, coated fabrics and the like. The standards met are ASTM D6413-99, DOC-FF 3/71, CALIF TB-117, GB/T 5455, CPAI-84.
The test instrument is a Vertical Flame Tester. Mainly composed of stainless steel combustion chamber (with observation doors and windows), automatic ignition system, timing system, sample fixture, gas supply system and so on. After the standard ignition time, the control panel’s buttons and timing display device accurately record the fabric’s afterburning and smoldering time to determine its combustion characteristics.
Horizontal Flammability Test:
For the horizontally placed sample to be ignited to the standard time, the spread distance and time of the flame were measured, and the flame spread characteristics of the fabric were characterized by the spread rate of the flame. This method is applicable to the detection of various types of textiles, especially automotive interior fabrics. The standards met are: ISO 3795, FMVSS 302, DIN 75200, SAE J369, ASTM D5132, JIS D1201, AU169, FZ/T 01028.
The test instrument is a Horizontal Flame Tester. The instrument is equipped with a sealed stainless steel combustion chamber and observation window, which is resistant to high temperature and pressure. It has a suspended tympanic membrane structure with steel spring and vibration damping system for smooth operation. It is equipped with a sample holder and a door burner, and the sample holder can be moves up and down and left and right. The basic mode is equipped with manual timing control. Equipped with an automatic gas control system including an electromagnetic control gas valve, an automatic ignition timer and a controller.
45 Degree Combustion Test:
Ignite the sample which placed in the direction of 45 degrees, measure the time required for the flame to burn up a certain distance on the sample, or measure the afterburning and smoldering time, the damaged area and the length of damage after burning the sample, or burn the measurement sample to the number of times the flame needs to be removed at a certain distance from the lower end of the specimen. This method is applicable to the flammability test of textiles. The standards met are: ASTM D1230, FTMS 191-5908, CFR 16 Part1610, CAL IF TB117, NFPA702, GB/T 14644.
The test instrument is a Textile 45 degree Flame Tester, and the configuration is similar to the above two combustion testers. They all contain ignition systems, timing systems, gas supply systems and basic combustion chambers and supports. According to the standard, the ignition time is much shorter than the above two instruments, generally 1 s. After the fabric is ignited, it burns to the cotton thread, and the cotton wire is blown to make the weight fall, thereby triggering the stop switch, and the display shows the burning time.
