ISO 4589-3 Elevated-temperature Oxygen Index Tester

ISO 4589-3 Elevated-temperature Oxygen Index Tester

1. Test standard

EN ISO 4589-3: Plastics-Determination of burning behaviour by oxygen index –Part 3: high-temperature test

2. DIN EN ISO 4589-3 test principle

Fix a sample vertically in the transparent combustion cylinder of the upward flowing oxygen and nitrogen mixture, ignite the top of the sample, and observe the combustion characteristics of the sample, and compare the continuous burning time of the sample or the burning length of the sample with the given standard. In comparison, the minimum value of the oxygen concentration was estimated through a series of experiments at different oxygen concentrations.

For comparison with the specified minimum oxygen index value, three samples are tested and at least two samples are judged to be extinguished according to the standard.

Method B—Diffusion Ignition Method

5. ISO 4589-3 Test Method

Both rigid and soft materials can be tested in specific fixtures. The fixture is installed in a transparent combustion canister of oxygen and nitrogen gas mixture flowing upward in a laminar flow manner. After the condition of the sample is adjusted, the room temperature test is usually carried out. When the top surface is ignited, the maximum time of the flame contact surface is 30s, and it is removed every 5s to observe whether the sample burns. This ensures that the sample temperature is not too high, resulting in lower OI values. During diffusion ignition, the flame contacts the vertical side of the sample about 6 mm down. In the film test, the film was wrapped around the rod at 45°, the rod was removed to fix the end of the sample and the top 20mm was cut off.
