Flame Retardant Test
Flame retardant test is to detect the burning characteristics of products and materials. There are many products that require flame retardant testing, such as fireproof material products, building material products, electronic and electrical products, textiles, household items, plastics, coatings, etc.
The flame retardant properties of materials include the following aspects:
(1) Ignition and flammability: the difficulty of being ignited;
(2) Flame propagation speed: the speed of flame spread along the surface of the material;
(3) Fire resistance: the speed at which fire penetrates material components;
(4) Heat release rate (HRR): the amount of heat released when the material burns and the rate at which it is released;
(5) The difficulty of self-extinguishing;
(6) Smoke generation: including the amount of smoke, smoke release speed and smoke composition;
(7) Generation of toxic gases: including gas amount, release rate and composition.
The current mainstream flame retardant testing agency standards include:
ULUnderwriters Laboratories Inc
IEC International Electrotechnical Commission
ASTM American Society for Testing and Materials
EN European Committee for Standardization
FMVSS US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard
ISO International Organization for Standardization
GB National Standardization Administration Committee
Common flame retardant test standards
1. Plastics
Test methods and standards for plastic flammability (UL94 flammability test)
Determination of limiting oxygen index of plastics
Determination of the amount of smoke generated (smoke density method)
2. Car interior
FMVSS - U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard
SAE—American Society of Mechanical Engineers
ISO 3795 - international standard
GB 8410——China National Standard
And Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, BMW, General Motors, etc. all have their own standards.
3. Fabric
ASTM common fabric burning test method
Tent flame retardant test standards
BS, EN, ISO, GB/T standards on flame spread of textiles
British pajamas burning test; children's pajamas test standard
4. Toys
Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Toy Safety ASTM F963-11 European Standard
Toy Safety Part 2: Mechanical and Physical Properties EN71-2:2011
Toy Safety Part 2: Flame Retardant Properties ISO 8124-2:2007
National Toy Safety Technical Specification GB 6675-2003
Japanese Toy Safety Standard ST2002-2:2009
United States Code of Federal Regulations CPSC 16 CFR
According to combustion factors or combustion characteristics, the flammability test of flame retardant materials is usually divided into ignition test, combustibility test, calorific value test, smoke test, gas release test and fire resistance test.
Test methods for flammability of flame retardant materials
1. flammability
Flash point, autoignition temperature point, oxygen index.
2. Combustibility
Flame propagation speed, burning time, charring length.
3. Calories
Heat of combustion, temperature rise.
4. Smoke volume
Smoke volume, smoke speed.
5. Toxicity
Combustion gas analysis, animal experiments.
With the development of modern technology and the improvement of people's awareness of environmental protection and safety, there are more and more flammability test methods for flame retardant materials, and the evaluation of the combustion behavior of flame retardant materials is becoming more and more comprehensive.
