Flame Retardant Test Method for Textiles

Flame retardant test method for textiles

Vertical method

Place a sample of a certain size under a specified burner and ignite it. Measure the afterburning, smoldering time and damaged length of the sample after the specified ignition time

More than 45 degrees method

(Method A): Under specified test conditions, ignite a textile sample at a 45-degree direction, measure the afterburning and smoldering time, damaged area and damaged length of the fabric after combustion.

(Method B): Under specified test conditions, ignite a textile sample at a 45-degree direction, and measure the number of times the fabric needs to contact the flame at 90mm from the lower end of the sample to burn.

Less than 45 degrees method

Under specified conditions, place the sample at an angle of 45 degrees, ignite the sample for 1s, and the time required for the sample to burn a certain distance with flame upwards is used as a measure to assess the intensity of the burning of the textile. For fabrics with raised surface, the ignition or melting of the base fabric is used as an additional indicator of the intensity of burning, but it needs to be noted.

Limiting oxygen index method

Under specified test conditions, the low oxygen depth required for the material in the oxygen-nitrogen mixture to just maintain the burning state.

The main uses of the above test methods are:

Vertical method: Applicable to the determination of flame retardant properties of clothing fabrics, decorative fabrics, tent fabrics, etc. with flame retardant requirements. It can be used by the printing and dyeing industry, rubber industry, textile inspection departments and scientific research institutions

More than 45 degrees method: Applicable to the determination of the damaged area and damaged length of textiles and other materials when they burn at 45°. Method B is used to determine the number of times the textile is exposed to the flame when it is heated and melted to a specified length at 45°.

Less than 45 degrees method: Applicable to measuring the intensity and speed of burning of flammable textiles once ignited when worn.

Limiting oxygen index method: Applicable to the determination of the combustion properties of various forms of textiles (including woven, knitted, non-woven fabrics, etc.), and also applicable to the determination of the combustion properties of plastics, rubber, paper, etc.
